I have a similar problem with IE, except that it just shuts down when i open it. I have been trying to find the IE file on my computer so I can delete it and then re download it from microsoft.com, but I cant find it anywhere. Maybe you could try deleting it also, if we can ever findout how to, and then dl it again.

run
then type in
msconfig

go over to the startup tab.
only uncheck the boxes you dont need..
leave ur firewall running. and antivirus etc.

other than that if you have win xp turn everything else off.

I'd say that it's a good chance that your spyware scanner may have mistaken a need component of IE for malicious content and removed it. I’d subjest that you delete IE completely from your computer and re-install it.

To remove IE go to Start > Add or Remove programs (OR Control Panel > Add or remove programs.) > Add or Remove windows components > Uncheck IE > click next > Set back and wait for it to be uninstalled.

IE Download can be located here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d-48f5-b02b-20b602228de6&DisplayLang=en

Ok, let's be honest. If you're satisfied that you've removed every last trace of malware and it's still happening, then basically IE on your PC is probably knobbed.

There's a very good reason why IE isn't in the Add/Remove list, and that is because it is an integral part of the OS, and trying to uninstall it and reinstall it is not an appropriate action.

My advice would be to reinstall XP SP2, this will effectively perform a reinstall of IE (amongst many, many other things) and should hopefully sort this out.

And if you're still running SP1 then you really should upgrade anyway! ;)

Sorry I missed out on all the fun, but the problem is solved, so I'm closing the thread to save jaketo from blush-worthy attention. =)

Heheheh it makes a nice change. :)

I have this theory (developed over many years of working in IT) that the perception of IT support only exists between the negative and neutral i.e. if something isn't working, users will kick and scream and shout until it's fixed, but if everything is working fine, no-one says a word.

I gave up expecting any kind of thanks a loooooong time ago. ;)
