Get "Adaware" (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5)
and "Spybot - Search and Destroy" (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html)

Install, update, and run.

Let me know if you have any problems...

You can "free your ram" I have a question for you, in the tool bar (sup the bar downward in your PC) do you have lots of icons (ex: msn, quicktime, etc)? cuz if you do this is what makes your PC slow when you turn it on, check which of this programs you dont need to use when you turn on your computer (such as Msn, and quicktime, this are not necesary) so go to the options page on this programs and choose "do not run at start up" and then with that your pc will be faster

Also you can go to "internet options" and clean your cookies and objects

Good point, Teenjack, although I have never been able to find the option of "do not run at start up" for every program.
What I have found that will stop ANY program from running at start up is;

go to Start > Run
Type "msconfig" without the quotes
Hit "OK"

When the window opens, select the "Startup" tab and uncheck anything you don't want to run at startup.
click "Apply" or "OK" and restart the machine.
When it starts a warning window will tell you that the startup configuration has been changed. Check the "Do not tell me again" box and click "OK"

DO NOT MESS WITH THE OTHER TABS unless you know what you are doing.

Kaelas recommends finding someone knowledgable about computers and getting them to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows.

He further adds: "DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS YOURSELF."

(I'm at his apartment, so clearly I must give heed to his advice.)

If jaketo were here, he would probably say that we're using too drastic of a measure -- in my experience, however, once you've got that sort of heavy spyware and/or virus infestation, trying to clean it out without formatting is just more trouble than it is worth.

Heheh, thanks! :) My personal rule of thumb is always that the fix should be appropriate to the problem - I've seen posts in this forum for example about a CD drive not working correctly where sysrestore and formatting have been offered as solutions. Yep, that'd work, but in the same way that buying a new car would solve a flat tyre -totally overkill and unnecessary :)

In this case however, it does sound as though the PC is completely rife with scumware and so I'm going to agree totally that finding someone knowledgable about computers and getting them to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows. is probably the best longterm solution. Removing one example of scumware can be tricky and if you are infected with more than one example, it can be veeeery tricky, timeconsuming and with no guarantee of success.

I do have one question though for James1471-, do the problems only start when you logon to Windows or is it literally as you say in your post, when you switch your PC on?

Cheers

Be more specific.
For the pop ups, like the above said, get those anti-spyware crap.
If your computer freezes, it could be your RAM, CPU, Power Supply, graphics controller, etc.

Suggestion: Beware of what you download/do and get a new computer. >_>

Get a program that frees up RAM like RamAgent which can be found at http://digitallonghorn.com/page.php?id=17, it is completely free and is also great for clicking as you can have more windows up due to more RAM available.

wow, this page is good for useful download links :O I have a problem, pretty much all of my .exe programs dont work now! Ive had this program before and resolved it by formatting, but i dont wanna do that now. The problem is that when ever i click an exe file to run it, a dos window comes up and says "program too big to fit in memory" then closes and the icons have gone all funny :S I have tried most suggestions by people with none acctually resolving the problem. Help!

Remo4: I hate to say dude, but the best thing I can think of is a format, but wait to see what some other people say first. Usually when you get a problem like this, your computer is unlikely to function properly again without formatting :/

Here's what i suggest cos i think this is a virus. And assuming is not your RAM is damaged, in that case you should buy another one.
1) Restart you PC. Hit F8 when starting.
2)You'll see advanced options to start: choose Failsafe mode.
3)After loading again: go to 'RUN' and type msconfig
4)Look for the tab named 'Start' or 'Run' (i'm not sure cos my Win is in Spanish) and says 'Inicio'
5) There will be a list of programs: unselect all and only enable your Antivirus.
6) Exit...and choose restart
Repeat steps 1 and 2.
7) go to 'Run' and Type 'regedit'
8) go to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run
9)There you'll see some entries...read carefully...you should know what you have installed. ERASE all suspicios entries (dialers, games, VXD extensions, EXE you don't know, etc)
10) go to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run
Repeat step 9.

Your PC will be in minimal mode and all those programs disabled. You can check if you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL the list of programs: close all those you don't know or you know are useless.

Install Ad-Aware. Run Ad-Aware and then your Antivirus. After that you should restart to let the programs clean all the remainings. Also is a good idea to clean your Browser Cache, cos most virus reside there.

IN the worst case and if this not work, try using System Restore.

Hope this helps.

PS. the problems you describe is a Trojan. It won't let you open CTRL+ALT+DEL. Is hard to remove but i've already done and has worked for me. I think you're visiting too much porn sites. ;)

Ok, I think that sadly you've actually got more than one problem here.

Scumware (pop-ups, trojans et al.) need an operating system to run and thus will only start running when Windows loads. If you're PC is freezing literally when you switch it on, the scumware obviously isn't loaded yet, so you're freezing PC issue isn't related that (to the purists out there, yes, it is techncailly possible to have scumware that will infect your BIOS thus negating the need for Windows, just very unlikely, almost unheard of in the wild and actually quite pointless! :))

This problem sounds to me like some hardware failure, perhaps RAM or CPU. As the PC boots eventually it may just be that your RAM or CPU isn't seated correctly - open your box and check. It could also be that your PSU is slightly underrated for the power required by your PC. Worth checking out.

All the pop-ups etc (ironically "loads of thing saying about giving my computer a scan to check for problems?" are probably scumware as well) sound very much like scumware and we've already covered that.

One further point, 7) go to 'Run' and Type 'regedit'
8) go to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run
9)There you'll see some entries...read carefully...you should know what you have installed. ERASE all suspicios entries (dialers, games, VXD extensions, EXE you don't know, etc)
10) go to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run
Repeat step 9.

is indeed where Windows launches the startup programs from, but before deleting keys from your reigstry, back it up! (in Win2K, select the branch you wish to back up, then click on the Registry menu, then select Export Registry File, give it a meaningful name and save it!)

Yup, should have told you to back up first.
