This thread is a place where you can post images and specifications of your system you use.

When commenting on one or the other package please type which post you're referring to (that way we can keep one post with images and info and keep all the comments in the same post, moderators will move comments into the post).

Example:

Vaekor's post: I think your HDD is a bit small, you should also get water cooling...

So go ahead create a thread with images and info about your computers :)

EDIT: I'll have my vengeance on you some day, Kalki. ~ Vaekor

Why does everyone keep using rig in the singular? Have you no computing pride? Limiting myself to computers in this house which are owned entirely by me, which are plugged in and operational, I narrowed it down to 4. (In case you can't see it in the picture, every machine I run, Mac or Windows, has an Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen.) The list is as follows.

Jotunheim
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://homepage.mac.com/vaekor/rigs/jotunheim.jpg

Custom Vaekor-Crafted Rig

3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor
1 GB DDR SDRAM
ATI RADEON All-In-Wonder X800 graphics card (256 MB memory, AGP)
19 inch flat panel monitor (Samsung SyncMaster 912N)
running at 1280 x 1024 screen resolution
running Win XP Pro with SP2
DVD+-RW, CD-RW combo drive
2 x 250 GB hard drive (ATA, not SATA, if you care)
Linksys 802.11g Wireless card

Aelfheim
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://homepage.mac.com/vaekor/rigs/aelfheim.jpg

15-inch PowerBook G4

1.67 GHz PowerPC G4 Processor
1 GB DDR SDRAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card (128MB memory, AGP)
running at 1280 x 854 screen resolution
running OS X "Tiger" (10.4.4)
SuperDrive (DVD+-RW, CD-RW combo)
100 GB hard drive (ATA, not SATA, if you care)
Airport Extreme card (802.11g wireless)

Niflheim
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://homepage.mac.com/vaekor/rigs/niflheim.jpg

Sony VAIO RS-310

2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor
256 MB DDR SDRAM
onboard Intel 845GV integrated graphics chip with 64 MB shared memory
15 inch flat panel monitor (ViewSonic VA520)
running at 1024 x 768 screen resolution
running Win XP Pro with SP2
DVD+-RW, CD-RW combo drive
80 GB hard drive (ATA, not SATA, if you care)
Linksys 802.11g Wireless card

Midgard
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://homepage.mac.com/vaekor/rigs/midgard.jpg

Graphite iMac DV SE (Summer 2k Edition)

500 MHz PowerPC G3 Processor
384 MB SDRAM
ATI RAGE Pro 128 chipset
running at 1024 x 768 screen resolution
running OS X "Jaguar" (10.2.4) / OS 9.2.2 (dual boot)
CD-ROM, DVD-ROM combo drive
30 GB hard drive (ATA, not SATA, if you care)
no longer connects to network at all

Nepthys: Very nice Vaekor. But what do you use them all for? =D
WraithXBlade: I have more, but I don't have enough space currently to run 'em all... I have 3 other computers ready to hook up on the drop of the dime. ;)

Vaekor: I use Jotunheim as my powerhouse, and for CW and IRIS. I use Niflheim for casual internet activity, or for when I need to access the internet while working in the study (typically repairing another computer). I use Aelfheim for any time I need to use a computer downstairs, or away from the house, or in bed -- but it is especially useful when at school. Midgard is the iMac that was damaged in a power surge, and isn't all there anymore... but it serves as a data backup for my music, makes a great jukebox, and is cute. There's more to the story, but I'd have to make a whole new thread, "The History Of Vaekor's Computers".

Vaekor and Kalki: Respect for some very nice setups :D

Vaekor: I tend to use the word 'rig' more in a network sense, e.g. lots of bits of kit all talking and working together as one.

xSunnyx: Let us know what you get?

Here's my rig. My flat is very small (Central London is extremely expensive) so it's designed more for functionality than anything. Sorry the photos are a bit dark, I prefer my flat that way and the photos looked poor if I used the flash.

http://www.jaketo.f2s.com/pc/old/1.jpg

PC #1

The PC on the right with all the neon stuff going on and the twin VDUs is my main PC -

Intel P4 3.6MHz
ASUS P5AD2 Premium mobo
2Gb Crucial DDR2-667 SDRAM
Sapphire PCIe 256Mb Radeon X800XT
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
1 x ATA133 80Gb HDD (Boot drive)
2 x SATA 240Gb HDDs in RAID 1 (Storage drive)
1 x ATA133 20Gb HDD (FAT16 - swap file)
X-Connect™ 400W ATX Modular PSU (just so cool!)
Creative GigaWorks S750 7.1 Speakers

Plus lots of modding kit, and connected to the usual peripherals, and lots of other peripherals and gadgets, too many to list here (unless someone really wants to know.)

The wooden gantry in the foreground is to correctly place all the 7.1 speakers. The left side speaker is retractable ;)

PC #2

The PC on the left is my ADC, test server, office VPN client, my daughter's PC when she's with me etc -

AMD Athlon XP 2400
ASUS A7V8X Deluxe mobo
1Gb Crucial DDR2 SDRAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Soundblaster Live! Platinum
1 x ATA133 70Gb HDD (Boot drive)
2 x SATA 160Gb HDDs in RAID 1 (Storage drive)
1 x ATA133 20Gb HDD (FAT16 - swap file)

Another picture from a closer angle, gantry retracted -

http://www.jaketo.f2s.com/pc/old/2.jpg

And a final close-up of PC #1 -

http://www.jaketo.f2s.com/pc/old/3.jpg

I also have two old Dell laptops that I drag around for site work but they're not worth mentioning.

It's all hooked together on a 1Gbit network backbone and connected to the outside world with an 8Mbit pipe. Nice.

For reference, the wax lamp is not networked (yet) and the chair is extremely comfortable ;)

Thanks :)

I get an annual bonus from work and I tend to build myself a new PC with it every year and always try to go for what's top of the range at that time if I can, and rotate them i.e. new PC becomes PC #1, current PC #1 becomes PC #2 and PC #2 gets sold off.

A bit extravagant perhaps but I like to be up-to-date and it's not like I actually have a real life or anything ;)

I used to prefer Nvidia GPU based cards (although I never really forgave them for what they did to 3Dfx...) but two years ago the reviews about the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro GPU were extremely good so I switched to ATI and have been very happy with them.

And guess what, I got my bonus for last year yesterday so it's time to go shopping again :D

Sweet setup man, love the whole workspace too! :D

But Bitter-Peace is right, you really should get a new chair, the amount of time you're going to be spending there, your back's going to be crippled ;)

RaVeNsRaGe,

If you use msinfo32 instead of DXDiag and export the summary page, might get something a little more meaningful ;) DXDiag's just for multmedia stuff controlled by DirectX.

Ok, I dont have a picture, cuz my computer's in the shop
Here are some general specs
AMD 64 3400+ (fried     under warrenty)
MSI V(something) motherboard (fried  also under warranty)
Ati All-In-Wonder 128 (fried )
1Gb Ram
220 Gb HD

so pretty much I have a fried system right now that is getting all new parts under warranty. but the graphics card isnt. I know you can say that sux too.
But hey It only cost me 400 for the system, so that might be why it doesnt work :denny:
Oh and the computer I'm using now is a piece of crap that's not worth mentioning

lil update :)

Since watercooling is coming in soon (if all goes well and they ain't screwing me over) it wouldn't fit in my Coolermaster Stacker 830. So replace it with a Lian Li V2100.

Don't mind the chaotic cable management, once i figure out how everything hsa to be routed with my watercooling i'll set them right :D

Got 2 Pc's and 1 laptop on the network.

We got 2 pc's with the same specs, as follows:

CPU:3GHZ
Ram: 1GB
Card: Ati Radeon X800 Pro
HD:200GB total (once pc has a 120GB Portable HD)
All other specs aren't really relevant to mention.

Laptop:
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Ram:512
Card: Ati Mobility Radeon Xpress 200 series
HD:60GB

The laptop can be better, the 2 pc's are pretty decent to game with.

There's way too much spam in this thread, time for some real hardware :)

My setup is basically the same as it was here (http://www.phoenixrising.at/forums/showpost.php?p=310272&postcount=17) earlier in this thread, but with one subtle addition. A cookie goes to the first person that spots it ;)

http://www.jaketo.f2s.com/pc/old/4.jpg

The larger of the two monitors is a Dell 3007WFP 30" widescreen monitor, running in native mode at 2560 x 1600 x 32, running off the right hand computer.

And to do justice to such a ridiculously obscene monitor, I also got one of these (http://www.sapphiretech.com/uk/products/products_overview.php?gpid=161&grp=3) to power it.

For reference, the other monitor is a regular Dell 17" monitor, running off the left hand computer.

I no longer have any reason to ever leave my flat again :D

(I also have a second wax lamp now but I still haven't networked them..)

Scarab moans in the corner and wishes college didn't cost so much

I'm going to assume that this post is on-topic and that your intended meaning is that the expense of going to college is preventing you from buying a computer worth posting about.

It is however the most off-topic on-topic post in this thread so far and disturbingly close to being spam.

Beware all :)

Just bought a laptop off newegg that I have been wanting for a bit, well obviously I /wanted/ much more but for price reasons had to lower expectations. Heh, the government is paying for most of it, if not all of it though. God, I love college grants etc...=). Free ride in school, books, and laptop and I may only have to pay a couple hundred dollars out of my pocket...quick specs.

Asus Laptop (Really liked their motherboards so I decided to check out their laptops, I hope I'm not disappointed)

CPU:
2.0 GHz Intel core 2 duo (though I really would've liked to go with amd but at the moment they are getting pwned severely.)
4 mb L2 cache

FSB:
800 MHz

RAM:
1 gig + 1 gig free combo
Upgradeable up to 4 gig
DDR2 667

Video:
Dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS with 256 mb

Networking:
Gigabyte lan
a/b/g wireless (wanted n but that's one of the many things I had to give up on)

Hard drive:
5400rpm 160 gb sata hd

Screen:
15.4" WXGA
1280 x 800

Optical drive:
8x supermulti

Extras:
8 in 1 card reader
optical mouse
1.3M web cam

Weight:
6.5 lbs

OS:
vista home premium though I imagine soon it will also have fedora core 7

Probably forgot some stuff but that's all I can recall for now.

Maybe later I will give you the specs on my other 6 or so computers =P, most of them are donated and I have them stripped down into parts in boxes for extra pieces etc. Got donated computers from a bunch of people and just ripped the guts out and got rid of the cases. I run 2 desktops both p4's, which actually neither of which I am positive on the specs on =P. I am somewhat sure my server has 512 mb ram and my desktop has 1 gig. Desktop has a sata hard drive (not sure on the size, since I don't use it all and is partitioned in two sections. One for windows, one for linux). Server is a pata and not sure on it's size either. I'll take a tally when I clean them out again. I also have an old laptop, about 8 years old which is a p3 or p2...128mb in ram I believe...had to replace the hard drive in it once (30 gb IBM travel mate).

All I have to say is I will never buy a desktop computer again and haven't in 5 years. There are way too many no-name crap parts in them for my liking, so much better and cheaper when you build your own.

Well I got my laptop yesterday (am making this post from it now). It is definitely a step up from my 8 year old pentium II laptop, with the keyboard matrix going on it. That thing was turning into more of a desktop since I had to actually plug a keyboard into it to be able to use it reliably. This is my first encounter with vista (vista premium). After building one of the many computers for my school club I played with vista for maybe an half an hour, so this is my first real experience. I do have to say vista isn't too bad, though I had to set the control panel and the start menu back to the old school ones. I can't handle too many changes ;). Vista for me seems rather unstable, but so are most windows products when they are first released. Also coming from the guy who has been using mostly linux for the past 2 years anything seems unreliable after that experience. Though Vista has proven itself well enough for me to at least keep it on here and not downgrade it or completely get rid of it for linux. I am even debating whether or not I want to go through the hassle of putting linux on here, but eventually I think I will have to break down for it. I am a sucker for linux. This is also my first step into the duel core world. I am not extremely impressed but judging a duel core on a vista instead of XP which I am used to with my P4's I can't make any final conclusions. Though I do have to say I have to work at maxing the processor out so it is definitely worth it I think. The install of the extra 1 gig of ram went very easy surprisingly, since my first laptop they have made it very easy to get inside the cases of these things. A few screws and just pop it right in. Vista definitely needs at least 2 gig's and I'm surprised they can sell computers with only 1. Well time to get back to playing around. I'll stop back later with more fun updates =).

My old PC at home:
P4 1.8GHz
512MB RDRAM 800Mhz
Intel D850EMV2 motherboard
ATI Radeon 7000
Western Digital 60GB ATA100 HDD
NEC 15" LCD
Ubuntu 6.10 desktop

I don't have windows at home so I don't click. If I have to click, I VPN to office. Since I'm in charge of the server virtualization project, I put a virtual WinXP Pro on the VM host and boy, I click fast lol

Here are the server specs:
Dell PowerEdge 2950
Dual quad core Intel Xeon 2.66GHz (2x4MB cache) 1333MHz FSB (8 cores in total)
16GB RAM 667MHz (8x2GB) dual ranked DIMM
3x 146GB 15K RPM SAS SCSI HDD running RAID 5

VM host:
Ubuntu 6.04LTS server. If the VP happy with the virtualization result, we might buy VMWare Infrastructre3 in the near future but it still has a long way to go.

VM guests:
#1 WinXP Pro w/SP2, setup using 2 CPUs, 2GB RAM. It's a test vm for all of my Windows applications (of course it includes my CW and DDL ;))
#2 Win2k3, 2 CPUs, 3GB RAM as anti-virus server. This is to replace our old anti-virus server.
#3 Win2k3, 2 CPUs, 4GB RAM as print server. This is to replace our 3 print servers.
#4 Win2k3, 2 CPUs, 2GB RAM for other server applications testing.
#5 Ubuntu 6.04LTS server, 2 CPUs, 1GB RAM as network monitoring server running nagios 2.9
#6 Ubuntu 6.04LTS server, 2 CPUs, 1GB RAM as apache Web server
#7 Ubuntu 6.04LTS server, 2 CPUs, 1GB RAM as MySQL server

The office LAN backbone is 1Gb and the Internet speed is 20Gb up and down through Fiber. When I use VPN, I don't feel any lag at all. After all that, I don't see why I need to upgrade my PC at home :D

Sony Vaio here's the specs i can be bothered 2 find:

OS: Windows Xp Sp2 "home ed."
Pentium 4
CPU 3.40Ghz
3.39Ghz, 1.00GB of RAM

ATI RADEON 9600 Series,

Internal HD - 235GB

External HD - 300GB

not much else i can be asked 2 find lol.

#PC 2,

Dads Pc, erm AMD 64 Athlon,

bout 400gb INTERNAL

it has 3 OS lol

# Xp Home
# Xp Pro
# Vista Ultimate - LICENSED "he paid £30 for license as he works for MOD".

it has a better load of specs than the Pc i use.

Laptop 1#

Acer Ferrari 4000 series... "it is a AMD 64 aswell" - it beat all the desktop comps at the last LAN party i went to, people had alienwear and i still beat them via perfomance...

Laptop 2#

Currently my mum has this and she lives in Germany, this is the 1st FERRARI ACER laptop they made - not literally.. but 1st model.

my setup is nothing for the eye - still got my 2 19" screens and my 7 year old server case :) with all my hardware in it as my main comp :P
I like it cuz i soundproofed it and i can only hear a quiet buzz from it, its not the most portable thing being that is is super midi server tower weighing about 50lbs with the hardware in it.
atm that consists of a
core2duo 6300
2 gigs ram
geforce 7600GT
about a tbyte of harddrive space spread over 3 physical drives
asus p5b Mainboard

other than that one i got a sempron with 1.5 gigs as media-pc connected to my 42" flatscreen TV, a p4 3 ghz with 1.5 gig ram (wife), an athlon 2400 with 512 mb ram (daughter) and a centrino laptop :P. (I'm not sure why we have 5 computers for 3 ppl but we do :-P).

The spec's in an earlier post (http://www.phoenixrising.at/forums/showpost.php?p=310272&postcount=17), although the CPU, the graphics card, all the monitors and indeed the house have all been upgraded since then :)

This build won't be around for much longer, it's time for a major upgrade at the end of this month, £1,600 budget allocated towards CPU, mobo, RAM and graphics, should be fun :D

I'll post an update when it's finished.

Looking good Jaketo. I'll take that one off your hands once you buy new stuff ;)

On the wires issue - It is a very real problem. I have a lot of wires which have to pass close to a heating duct so keeping them out of the heating duct requires many strings and twisty ties! If I ever get around to pictures I'll take some of the wires too just for fun.

im gonna tidy them the only way i know how, bin the 3 ide drives and replace them with a 750gb sata :p

There isnt actually space to do much with the wires atm, and although you cant see it, the wires are routed arround the front intake fan so that as much airflow gets to the gfx card as possible. It may look messy, but there isnt much more i can do with whats in there atm.

NO, he never said that.

Hes keeping the shiny wires....

jaketo
06-01-2008, 04:03 PM
Lol! :D

I'm still very happy with this PC, the case and PSU are really good (albeit in need of a good dusting inside) and the airflow setup I have in there is working really well (5 x 80mm variable speed case fans with a 4-way front panel controller and the (shiny, UV reactive) cabling is routed nicely so rather than allocate any budget on replacing any of those, I'm just spending on the core components.

The plan is to get a mobo with the same form factor and layout, and then just replace like for like the mobo, CPU, RAM and graphics card with no need to do much with the cabling other than plug it all back in. The HDDs are very fast SATA in a RAID 0/1 configuration with a dedicated IDE drive for boot and a dedicated IDE drive for the swap file so they're all good, and since the Creative SB Vista drivers farce I'll be sticking to onboard sound (for now, although the Asus Xonar D2 is tempting).

I did strongly consider building from scratch and trying out a liquid cooling, but frankly I can't be arsed, I'd rather spend the money on the core components and for me as well the only real advantage of liquid cooling over air cooling is the potential reduction in noise but for me that's not an issue.

ChaosKuRi

Asus mobos are the absolute dog's bollocks, I've used them for many years and I can't praise them enough. I shall be buying another one this time, probably the Maximus Extreme. I'm also going to forego food and beer for a while and shell out on an QX9650, because I am an obsessive twat :D

I have my baskets ready with a number of online suppliers. As soon as my annual bonus hits my bank account at the end of the month I'll be proceeding to checkout, as it were, so to speak.

If I do not get my bonus for some reason, there will be bloodshed....

Theres my gear. It works pretty well, although it does have some minor problems...
For example the cardboard box serving as a cover for the CPU has burned up quiet a few times and needed replacement, and the computer crashes often (especially if I tap the box or move the desk a bit by accident).

Oh and also not to mention the power cord does not supply enough electricity because my dog has been gnawing on it recently, but I'm thinking of buying a treadmill as an alternative power supply.

Other than that, it's in pretty tip-top condition. http://img110.imageshack.us/img110/5212/thumbsupwu9.png

Hehehe, finished the Vista installation last night, just with drivers and updates, no tweaking at all yet.

My WEI is a clean 5.9, and 3DMark06 scored about 16,500 :D

Hopefully in Vista SP1 they'll extend the maximum WEI scores beyond 5.9 to make it a little more meaningful for higher end systems.

I'll move this into 'Show Off Your Gear' in a while, but for now it can have its own thread :)

So here it is, just about finished, the new PC I've been building for the last month or so.

Computers are my hobby (and my career!) and I scratch-build myself a new one once every two years (with plenty of interim upgrades) and with this one the design brief was simple - put together the best PC possible without cutting any corners, money no object.

The result is frankly insane and I'm bloody happy with it. It is extremely fast, very stable, very quiet and surprisingly cool (CPU idle temperature is about 22-24°C, under load it gets to about 32-36°C), and I'm very pleased with it. It's barely broken a sweat on anything I've thrown at it and I haven't even started OCing it yet, not really sure I'm even going to bother ;)

LMAO, I don't have Crysis so I got hold of the demo and tried running it in 2560 x 1600 with every graphics option set to Very High and 8x AA, and it managed about 2fps :D When I dropped the AA to 2x though it was playable and looked amazing.

Regarding cost, the total price for the computer itself was about £2,200. I already had all the peripherals so I didn't need any budget for those luckily.

It's a lot of money, but it's what I love to do so I don't have a problem with that :)
