Your teacher sets you some very strange homework.

In my technical opinion, the 'worst' viruses are the old-school ones. Modern viruses are just very clever scripts, although they are often far more damaging.

In my professional opinion, the worst threat to computer security is users - it is they that usually activate the viruses and other threats. To quote Kevin Mitnick, 'there is no patch for stupidity'. I rest my case ;)

the ones that damage a HD's root aren't that nice, don't ask me for the name though

the flu virus ^_^

kills many each year (the old and the young)

ok i don't know much about computer viruses.... but I'm not dumb enough to ever get one that was big, and I use antivirus stuff... besides... there's not much on my comp people would care about

I dont know, but I hate all viruses!

Well, to my knowledge, viruses that infect the Master Boot Sector can cause the most grief and/or damage, as removing them can cause unrecoverable damage and unexpected results within the system.

As for the worst virus? I don't know what it is; most viruses today just send copies of themselves in emails. If you want file-damaging shit, look up Trojans. They're the ones that usually do that.

Google it. Use statistics and voila ur done.

I think it depends on who you talk to, some would claim a certain virus was more worse than another and each would have their own reasons. Everytime a new virus alert comes out, its mentioned as one of the worst...

Worst virus ever :p

not sure which one actually did the most monetary damage, but I would guess it's one of these:

I love you virus
Mellisa virus
so big virus
my doom virus

In reality the worst computer virus is the id10t virus. It's spread by lack of knowledge in how computers work and doing stupid shit to cause problems yourself. All of the above listed virues spread because of 1d10t's, and if not for id10t's none of them would have ever done any damage whatsoever.

Check the following pages for more info;
Computer Viruses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_virus) General Information
List of Viruses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_computer_viruses)
Timeline of viruses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_notable_computer_viruses_and_worms)

Late January: MyDoom emerges, and currently holds the record for the fastest-spreading mass mailer worm.
March 19th: The Witty worm is a record breaking worm in many regards. It exploited holes in several Internet Security Systems (ISS) products. It was the fastest disclosure to worm, it was the first internet worm to carry a destructive payload and it spread rapidly using a pre-populated list of ground-zero hosts.
May: The VBS/Loveletter worm, also known as the "I love you" virus appeared. As of 2004, this was the most costly virus to business, causing upwards of 10 billion dollars in damage.

Sorry for resurrecting an old topic, but I personally think the worst virus out there is:

Microsoft Windows

Linux and Mac guru, sorry

there are actually ways to break drives through raw IO Commands... back in the oldschool days before the smart chip this was pretty easy especially from unix.
echo "0x00 false" << /dev/hda would do the job before the SMART chip was invented. But even so if you play with the drive's acoustic tuning enough while sweeping the head for a decent period of time the drive can break; which I mean if your MBR is corrupted so what you don't get your data... just lowlevel the drive, wipe the partition table and start over. If this happens you lose the drive, it's busted.

michelangelo owned your moms while you were sucking on a bottle... any virus that whacks your MBR is the deadliest, as its almost impossible to detect (most work on specific days, and only for that day, yet they will come back every single year)
Menem Tocoto and Michelangelo are examples. I remember cleaning MT from my pc when i was around 9... highly annoying, it wouldnt let your pc start on a specific day in september, making a constant loop in the boot sequence v_v

Any virus that you can't kill with an anti-virus :)
How about: If you win lottery, you buy a million computers and have all your data copied to each one. So if the virus destroys 999,999 of your computers, you pull the last one out of the network before it's too late and you still didn't lose your data. Then rebuild your system on the 999,999 destroyed computers and you have a million working computers again :) But I thnk that it is worth it more to just install the most perfect antivirus even if it costs a million bucks, and spend the rest on a vacation (include a laptop :p)

there are so many, it is hard to say... though, here is a funny story... (true...)

i was web browsing one day, and somehow my antivirus got shutoff... my comp started running really slow... then my moniter went black... i had to restart the comp... i then found my antivirus was off... i turned it on and did a scan... 18 viruses were found... lol

Did alittle search...Found out that CIH is the worst virus - According to desktoppipeline.com's " The 10 Most Destructive PC Viruses Of All Time" list thingie.

Here's alittle about CIH:

CIH (1998)

Estimated Damage: 20 to 80 million dollars worldwide, countless amounts of PC data destroyed

Unleashed from Taiwan in June of 1998, CIH is recognized as one of the most dangerous and destructive viruses ever. The virus infected Windows 95, 98, and ME executable files and was able to remain resident in a PC's memory, where it continued to infect other executables.

What made CIH so dangerous is that, shortly after activated, it would overwrite data on the host PC's hard drive, rendering it inoperable. It was also capable of overwriting the BIOS of the host, preventing boot-up. Because it infected executable files, CIH wound up being distributed by numerous software distributors, including a demo version of an Activision game named Sin.

CIH is also known as the Chernobyl virus because the trigger date of certain strains of the virus coincides with the date of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor accident. The virus is not a serious threat today, thanks to increased awareness and the widespread migration to Windows 2000, XP, and NT, none of which are vulnerable to CIH.

The Melissa (http://www.desktoppipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=190300296&pgno=1#melissa) is second worst, the ILOVEYOU (http://www.desktoppipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=190300296&pgno=1#iloveyou) virus is 3rd, Code Red (http://www.desktoppipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=190300296&pgno=2) is forth, SQL Slammer (http://www.desktoppipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=190300296&pgno=2#slammer) is fifth, Blaster (http://www.desktoppipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=190300296&pgno=2#blaster) is 6th, Sobig.F (http://www.desktoppipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=190300296&pgno=3) is 7th, Bagle (http://www.desktoppipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=190300296&pgno=3#bagle) is 8th, MyDoom (http://www.desktoppipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=190300296&pgno=3#mydoom) is 9th, and last but not least Sasser (http://www.desktoppipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=190300296&pgno=3#sasser) is 10th.

Hope that helps you alittle :)

Not so sure the CIH was worst....Did you get stats from the military side? Melissa and Code Red hit the AF/ARMY and Navy the hardest in recent past. I remember reading abot it somewhere.

Hum...Donno, just copied what it said :p But, looking back on it "ILOVEYOU" caused by far the most damage when it comes to money lost - 2x~3x the one with the 2nd highest dollar amount. But, I suppose it's more to being the worst virus ever than just money, I would imagine allot of other things would also come into play, such as:

Amount of damage
Distribution
Hardness To Remove
Hardness To detect
Data Loss
Stealing Of Data
Amount of irreparable damage to the computer (Ie: BIOS rewriting...)
Clot Factor - How much it "gums up" your system, assuming it doesn't outright destroy it.

And, I am sure there are many more factors, those are just a few off the top of my head.

Worst virus ever? Ignorant computer users. they are responsible for more dead PCs than msblaster and sasser and ILOVEYOU combined. I mean who in their right mind would ever try TO WASH YOUR COMPUTER? Who would throw delicate technology against a wall? Who would try to cram the mini-Molex connector upside down? Who would force a serial cable into a PS/2 port? No virus has ever done that.

there was a tiny virus it was too small to detect and it wiped a file and replaced it with another copy of itsself, cant remember the name but the virus has been shut down now theres no known copies left
