I'm hoping some of you guys might have a solution for this problem I've got on my home PC.
I can't view any pages on the internet. I get the 'The Page Cannot Be Displayed' message come up on every single website I try.
I know that my connection is fine as I've tried the following: Run, cmd, ping www.kingsofchaos.com. I get 4 replys from the site doing this so I know that the connection is fine otherwise it would say something like abort retry.
I have set all the default options on Internet Explorer and this doesn't help either.
Have any of you heard of this before?:help:

have you tried going to the ip addy of the site? I had a virus one time that blocked IE from going to the site if it was typed in but if the ip addy was used it went everytime. BTW how did you get to this site if it does this EVERY time you try?

Hi guys, I posted the original message from work (which is where I am now) on Friday and haven't been able to get on at home still to reply or even see your responses.
I haven't got Mozilla or Firefox and I can't download them without the internet. I've tried just typing the IP address and that doesn't work either.
I'm running Norton Antivirus 2006 and that doesn't detect any viruses. I'm really at a lost cause here.
I can still download music from the internet though from software like Bitlord and Limewire so I know my connection is fine.
I'm gonna take my PC somewhere to get it fixed by someone who actually knows what they're doing.
Thanks for reading this though!

I don't mean to add to any confusion, but if you cannot reach any websites, but can access other things like P2P, then there might be something blocking port 80, where most HTTP travels through. It's been a while since I've done any research into this though. Please update us on what happens and I'll look into some other problems.

Thinking along the right lines :)
In the first instance you need to have a live connection to the Internet via your ISP, which in your case you have, as demonstrated by your ability to ping successfully ('ping' being one of the lowest level networking commands) (although an unsuccessful ping doesn't necessarily indicate a dead connection! 'ICMP drop' anyone?)
After that you need to install your various internet-enabled applications and configure them correctly to use your connection. Many of them will install nicely to use default settings which should just work, but as Clandestine_Blaze alluded, there are many different protocols on the Internet which use different ports.
My guess is that your problem is actually quite a simple one to fix, in that your IE settings are incorrect. You'll find these settings under IE -> Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections.
Unfortuantely I can't advise on what the settings should be as these will depend on your connection type and your ISP. If you can access your ISP's support page from work, you could check what the settings should be from there?
Good luck!

I'm not very clued up on all this. Do you know how I can access ISP's support page?

Wel first off you should run adaware and or spybot or anyother you may have.
try avg for free or the new one im useing is avast and its an active scaner.
viruses comonly do this to the ie program and are some times very hard to get rid of.
You may also try tools> internet options > advanced > restore defaluts

I've run Adware and Spybot and they don't pick up anything. I'm also running Norton Antivirus 2006 and that doesn't pick anything up. I've also restored the defaults and again this doesn't help.

This is actually the least of my problems right now. I've got a scorpion, as the picture suggests, and it's just given birth to 15 babies. Oh dear!

i saw hat you had limewire? tons of spyware/viruses there. when i used it ym norton didnt detect any of the viruses that got on so id reccomned either deleteing that going into safe mode and running a virus scanner again or reformatting without limewire

There is a particularly annoying virus/spyware out right now that does this. I have yet to be able to figure out what it is, no spyware or virus scanner seems to find it, but I have run into it 3 times in the last 2 weeks now. It does not show up in task manager or 3rd party task managers. This one is good, and if you've got it, sorry. As soon as I figure out what it is I'll let you know, for now the only solution I've found is a reformat (which is how I know it's something running)

When i have problems with my webpages i normally get told to sort my DNS out :S
cmd -> ipconfig /flushdns
that sorts my websites but i might be talkign complete shite.

2 things you might want to check:
internet explorer-connection settings-lan settings is there anything checkedß if so - uncheck it and try again unless of course your isp requires you to have some setting there.
Second thing to check would be your hosts file at windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts
open that with editor and check if there are any entries on the bottom that might redirect your dns requests.
try to go to 72.21.44.210 (pr server). if you are able to get there then try what the guy above me said and flush your dns file. if not then you have a program running that redirekts your ie requests. try to end all tasks that you do not know about.

Flushing the DNS cache actually might help. If you have bad DNS entries in the cache, flushing it will allow you to make new ones. :)
Another thing to look at is to see if your browser may have accidentially been set to use a proxy. Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings.
Some more questions - are you running a firewall? Zonealarm? Sygate Personal Firewall? Norton Internet Security? Also, you should try clearing your temporary internet files and cookies from your browser. I'm sure you've already tried that but in case you haven't, do it! :)
I hope you get up and running again.

change your DNS server to 4.2.2.1 (Level 3 Communication's public DNS server)
Start settings network connections right click your network connection click properties then scroll down to IP Protocol (TCP/IP) Use the following DNS server.
It sounds like his DNS is just not working... if Gnutella (whose protcol uses no DNS names) works then he's probably just got a bad DNS server. You guys are overthinking this with the stuff about viruses...

Agreed totally ;)
(Also if you're getting a valid response from a ping command that returns the IP address from www.kingsofchaos.com, then it's uinlikely to be a DNS issue either. Could you post exactly what the ping command gives you, would be helpful!)
However, as it could be a DNS issue, you should test your current DNS settings before you try changing them -
Drop to a command prompt and type nslookup
This should change the prompt to something like -
Default server: nameserver.isp.com
Address: 123.123.123.123
>
(The actual values will obviouly depend on your DNS settings)
At this prompt, type in any URL e.g. www.kingsofchaos.com, and you should get a meaningful reply which includes the IP address of the URL, which is 66.230.172.169 in this case.
If both these steps work fine then your current DNS settings are good and DNS is not the source of your problem. If not, then try changing your DNS settings as KFC_CT suggests.
(You can actually do this from the nslookup prompt temporarily by typing server 4.2.2.1, then try your test URL)

Thanks for all your advice guys - really appreciate it. However, my PC is completely screwed now. I can't even turn it on. I brought it to work so our IT guys can have a look at it. I had tried all the obvious things mentioned above like flushing the DNS and having nothing checked on the LAN settings etc, but nothing worked.

Yeah I'll let you all know what the problem was when it's fixed.
Thanks jaketo! If you want one of the babies for yourself - let me know! They're only 3 days old now so i'm looking for homes :)

Thanks for the idea but it's out of my hands at the moment. The IT guys at work have it although I don't think they've had a chance to look at it yet. It may be a week or 2 before I know the problem.
I'll be sure to post the problems here so you know what it was.

The IT guys have a had a look and think it's bad. They think that my Harddrive has died and I need a new one. I'll keep you all posted when I know more.

YOu know this sounds like the problem that my dad's computer had a week ago. Most likely if your browser doesn't want to connect to the interW3b, your simplest solution is to find a way to get another browser, or reinstall IE. That's what I would do. It also might be useful to eliminate that Norton. I have found that sometimes its Heruistic nature can damage the browsers, and eliminate things it needs.
