Here are a few programs that are useful for various purposes. Any suggestions for additions should be posted in a separate thread; please link to a page with information about the program rather than to a download. Also include a brief description.
Note that all programs must be legal. Those that are not will be removed.
Antivirus
AntiVir Personal Edition - http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html
My personal choice.
avast! - http://www.avast.com/eng/down_home.html
It's now free!
AVG - http://www.grisoft.com/doc/71/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
Lacks the polish of AntiVir and avast!.
Anti-spyware
Ad-aware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Regularly scan your system for spyware.
Spybot S&D - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
Another good choice for protecting your system from spyware.
Browsing
Firefox - http://www.getfirefox.com
Probably the best alternative to Internet Exploder.
Opera - http://www.opera.com
Another alternative to IE. This one has a huge fan following too.
E-mail
Thunderbird - http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/
A great alternative to Outlook Express.
Eudora - http://www.eudora.com/
Another alternative to Outlook Express. Been around for quite a while.
Instant Messengers (IMs)
Trillian - http://www.trillian.cc/
Multi-protocol IM. One IM to rule them all...
IM2 - http://www.im2.com/
A newer multi-protocol IM with many features. My personal favourite.
Programming
Perl - http://www.perl.com/
Probably one of the oldest languages used with CGI for dynamic Web pages. Contrary to popular belief, Perl is not CGI. See also: mod_perl (http://perl.apache.org).
PHP - http://www.php.net/
One of the most popular web languages. Can't fathom why.
Python - http://www.python.org/
A completely object-oriented, dynamically typed language that's steadily growing more popular. See also: mod_python (http://www.google.co.in/url?sa=U&start=1&q=http://www.modpython.org/&e=10313).
Ruby - http://www.rubycentral.com/
This is a language that was recently unleashed on the world of Web development in the form of Ruby on Rails (http://www.rubyonrails.com/) framework, which eliminates most of the repetitive coding that is required for a Web application and instead lets the programmer concentrate on the important parts.
Web server
Apache - http://httpd.apache.org/
One of the most widely used Web servers.
lighttpd - http://www.lighttpd.net/
A small, secure, standards-compliant and very fast Web server, optimised for performance.
Miscellaneous
AdMuncher - http://admuncher.com/
Removes ads from browsers and IMs, removes annoying site behaviours, blocks popups, and more.
Note that all programs must be legal. Those that are not will be removed.
